Whassup: Nearly September Edition

Reggie Watts might swear at AfroPunk

I'm not going to go look at the actual, official date for the end of summer because "factually accurate" is just not how we do things around here. But, you all know: ever since the days of riding swings and popping rad wheelies, the last week in August spells the end of skipping rocks all day. On the fields, the football players are suited up, and on the trees, the leaves are preparing to turn pretty and dead. So, for all intents and purposes, there's one more week of summer. Make it count by filling it with drunken fun, with Whassup: Nearly September Edition:

* Thursday, Aug. 23: Adira's Experience, Littlefield: Long a closing act for comedy and variety shows around these parts, Adira Amram and the Experience bring their unabashedly eighties outfits and joyously cheesy dance moves to the headlining slot. It's the most laughing you'll do while shakin' that thang.7:30pm, Doors, $10 DOS.

* Friday, Aug. 24: Mirman Comedy Fundraiser, Bell House: Unelected (so far) benevolent (so far) dictator of Park Slope comedy Eugene Mirman and his many funny friends entertain the shit out of you in order that they may entertain the rest of the shit out of you at Mirman's comedy festiva laterl. Wyatt Cynac (Daily Show), Brendan Small (Metalocalypse), and more. 7pm Doors, $25 GA.

* Saturday, Aug. 25: Punk Rock Sock Hop, Littlefield: All the local punk rock gets its nicest poodle skirts on to rock faces off, with acts from Jersey and Brooklyn.  8pm Doors, $7-10.

* Saturday, Aug. 25-26: AfroPunk Fest, Commodore Barry Park (Fort Greene): I remember going to the AfroPunk fest a few years ago, when it was still pretty small. Now in its 8th year,  the fest celebrating African American rock welcomes some big-ass names: Erykah Badu, Gym Class Heroes, Das Racist, Reggie Watts, and more. Bowing to the foodie/portable edible movement sweeping Brooklyn, this year's edition also wecomes a host of NYC food trucks. Noon-evening both days, FREE.

* Ongoing: BEAT Fest tix: A new festival showcasing Brooklyn performance artists, BEAT (Brooklyn Emerging Artists in Theater) just put its tix up for purchase. Shows going up all over BK, including in Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Red Hook, and more. $20 GA.
