Watch Out For Post-Hurricane Thieves

Last night, we received an email from a worried FiPS reader who told us about a creepy man possibly trying to break into Park Slope apartment buildings on 2nd Street near 6th Avenue. Here's the account:

"We stopped someone who appeared to be trying to enter the Garden Apt in our building. It was at 3:20pm on Tuesday.  He wore jeans, a nice black coat, large baseball cap, and large glasses, which practically covered his face. Basically, he fit into normal foot traffic. He was African American, about 5'9,'' early to mid 30s, about medium build. My wife noticed an outlined, gold tooth between the canine and two front teeth.

He walked his bike to the outside our house, approached the house with a package (which looked like an empty shipping package bag). He then rang that apt's doorbell, but no one came. He walked to the curb, checked to make sure that no one was looking, then quickly turned around slipped a work glove on and and pulled something out that looked like a key (After reviewing our camera footage many times, I see it's bigger then a key, more like a leather man tool). He approached the garden apartment door again and acted like he was going into his own apartment.

DETAILS EMERGE ON WEDNESDAY MORNING'S SEXUAL ATTACK IN THE SOUTH SLOPE

 Photo via www.newsone.com

The wave of sexual assaults that occurred in and around Park Slope last summer left our community feeling uneasy and, well, pissed. Attacks were happening left and right, yet assailants weren't being caught.

New details have emerged about a 22 year-old woman who was attacked yesterday morning around 5:30AM by a Hispanic male in his 40s. CBS New York reports that the woman was returning home from her job at a Manhattan night club when she exited the 4th Avenue/9th Street F/G station. As she walked on 16th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues she noticed a man was following her, but thought that she'd shaken him. Soon after, the man jumped at and groped her. Neighbors heard the young woman scream, and as they ran outside, the assailant fled. He didn't get far though -- a neighbor cornered him on Prospect Ave and 3rd Ave.

According to both CBS and NY1, the assailant was detained by police for about 15 minutes before being released.

People Are Still Robbing Our Asses While We're at Work

Holy crap, you guys! Hold on to your MacBooks! Keep those iPads safe! There are burglars in Park Slope! This is serious! I'm not joking! I am seriously freaking out (I challenged myself to see how many exclamation points I could fit into an opening paragraph. I think I did all right)!

Let's talk about it. While crime in the Slope is overall down this year, Park Slope Patch reports that so far there have been 14 more burglaries this year than this time last year. And the 78th Precinct is taking notice. Captain Michael Ameri says, "we do still have a significant burglary problem." And what's more, these perps aren't after the usual home robbery loot (jewelry and gold); they're heading straight for the iPads and MacBooks.

A Woman Was Groped on the 2 Train Last Night

Lest anyone has forgotten, last summer there were a string of sexual attacks around Brooklyn which, sadly, have all pretty much gone unsolved. Last night a brave FiPS reader (who shall remain anonymous) wrote in about an incident that happened to her on the 2 train:

"I was on the 2 train this evening around 6:00, and when the train was slowing to Bergen a guy stood and waited by the door I was sitting near. I was reading and not really paying attention to him (which I suppose made me a good target), and once the doors opened he reached over, grabbed my breast, and took off.

Out of my periphery I could tell he was wearing jeans and a bright blue and white striped sweatshirt, but I didn't see his face. I called the 78th precinct, and the officer I spoke to told me to call Transit District 32, and the officer I spoke to there said he couldn't take a report over the phone, and I haven't stopped at my local precinct yet, but figured I'd throw a heads up in case this isn't an isolated incident."

As of this moment this is the only incident we've been informed of, but everyone should remain vigilant. Ladies, make sure your pepper spray still works (just don't test it in the sink like one FiPS member did, or you will cough your ass off all night long).
