Who Gives A Shit: Work It OUT!

What with the chemical disaster unfolding at the YMCA this weekend, AND #myfatass just being its normal fat self, I've had fitness on the brain.

Then I came across this post on the Yelp message boards from someone who is thinking of opening up a spinning studio in Park Slope! (sidenote, I suggested this shit way back when in our Coming Soon to Park Slope post. Any aspiring entrepreneurs should feel free to check that post out for some other good ideas...espesh in the comments).

Right, so now I'm wondering what sort of health/wellness/exercise thingys you ppl have going in Park Slope that don't totally suck? Great classes? A killer trainer? You can even drop some regular ole NYC tips right on my face, just cuz we all take the subway-n-shit.

I'm goin to kick things off with a tip from Greg, cause he's now a Pilates convert: Chantal at Ellie Herman Pilates is the bomb diggity. She recently also started teaching IntenSati classes at their new Annex and those are allegedly pretty killer too.

Your turn...

Is Methodist's Labor & Delivery Unit Way More Fucked Up Than Other Hospitals'?

K, so remember when we talked about the fact that all the BK mamas are defecting to go birth their tiny terrors on the the Isle du Manhattan? You told us your Methodist horror stories here.

Not too long after, we got an anonymous email from a reader who calls herself "Rogue Nurse," an R.N. at Methodist in the Labor & Delivery Unit, about the c-section sitch happening there.  The tl;dr version of it is, in this nurse's opinion, that the entire operation is fucked (in Park Slope.  Yep.).  Clickity-click for the full dispatch:

WHO GIVES A SHIT, BREEDER EDITION: Where Did You Pop Out Yer Kid?

Because all natural births should be immortalized in stone.  (Photo: Gawker.)

I hate to break it to you guys, but the secret's out: the inhabitants of  Brownstone Brooklyn like to breed.  (That's us, in case you're keeping score.)  Gothamist's reporting that our BREEDERS are so fancy-ass, we refuse to pop our babies out in this borough, despite the fact that we carry around our Coop groceries in Brooklyn tote bags, and tell everyone how so over living in Manhattan we are.  (Truth, if you still have that scorecard handy.)

So, your Q of the day: BREEDERS, if your spawn entered the world in this fine city, where was he/she/it born?  And I suppppose if you're joining the legion of Park Slope Parents soonish, you're welcome to respond, too, since lately I'm getting the feeling every fucking person in this city besides me is pregnant.  (Yes, I give up my seat on the F...but do YOU?)

As snarky as I'm dying to get on this one, I suppose I'll have to step back and let you all steer the ship; the closest I've ever gotten to a Brooklyn hospital is my daily walk past Methodist.  (Side note: I do have a few friends--mostly native New Yorkers--who carry around cards that read, "If found injured in Brooklyn, transport to Manhattan hospital for medical treatment.")  Fire away in the comments.

CON ED TO BK: Sweat It Out

So, it's lookin like its gonna be a loooong, hot, wet, American summer around the BK.

Yesterday eve, word started trickling in from BK residents that Con Ed was making the phone rounds...and basically begging all y'all to turn off any "non-essential" electrical appliances.

Refrigerators were given a pass, but AC's not so much.

Apparently the heat of the last few days is sending electricity usage through the effin roof...and now bitches are worried about a brown out.

Gothamist managed to FURTHER clarify shit with a press release from Con Ed late last evening:

"Because of problems on electrical equipment supplying power to several neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Con Edison has reduced voltage by 8 percent to the area... One affected area is bounded by Newtown Creek on the north, Graham Avenue and Throop Avenue on the east, Fulton Street and Pacific Street on the south and the East River on the west. The other affected area is bounded by Fifth Avenue to Prospect Park West and from Pacific Street to 23rd Street.

"Company crews are working now to repair the problems. Con Edison has asked customers in the affected area to turn off all non-essential electrical appliances to help reduce electricity usage until equipment problems can be resolved... Con Edison urges customers to call 1-800-75-CONED promptly if they are experiencing any service difficulties."

As for wtf is going on today, I have no clue. I haven't been outside yet, but I'm guessing that it's Africa hot again, and my ass will be a sweaty mess by the time I arrive at the subway.

So yeah: be careful and don't waste energy-n-shit! Cause I SWEAR TO GAWD, if I gotta endure this heat without any AC, shit's gonna get ug-lay around here. Like Dexter ug-lay.

REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE! OR CONSERVE! WHATEVER!
