FiPS Cares: Let's Help These BK Filmmakers Raise Money For Slamdance!

The people of Park Slope love nothing more than to get all caught up in pet drama. Remember back in November when a man tied his dog up outside of a Radio Shack for a few minutes, and then some woman stole it because she thought it needed rescuing?’

Imagine a run-in like that sparking an unlikely friendship, which ultimately leads to a movie!

This is exactly what happened to filmmaker Keith Miller, who once found a lost dog in South Park Slope. After a few months of caring for it, he ran into a man on the street named Shannon Harper, who turned out to be the dog's owner. After the two men argued over the pup in question, Keith offered to buy the dog, then asked Harper if he wanted to be in a movie.

FiPS Cares: This Cat Needs a Home!

Hey, Park Slope cat lovers! Listen up. Gogo Gowanus, a good friend of FiPS, recently rescued a stray cat and is trying to find her a good home.

Last week my girlfriend and I found a cat on 15th between 4th and 5th aves.  She was hungry and dirty, but very sweet.  After petting her a bit, she followed us home.  I took her in.  The next day, I brought her to the vet.  She had fleas, ear mites and an eye infection, but is otherwise healthy.  So, first off, is anyone missing a cat?  The vet figures her to be about 7 or 8, she is about 6 lbs and is missing the top tip of her right ear.  It seems that she has lived with people, but due to her condition at the time we found her, I think she's been on the street for a little bit.  If she is not someone's cat, does anyone want to adopt her?  I would love to keep her but my girlfriend has 4 cats (all rescues) and lives in Queens - it's just too difficult for us to take care of cats in both boroughs and see each other too.  We have dubbed the cat Mochi Grimes (she is sweet and cute like a Mochi, but also kinda grimy when we found her).  A bath and healthy diet has brought her fur back to soft and clean.  She is very sweet, well behaved and will cover shifts at the co-op.

Mochi is pretty damn cute. Just look at those eyes. You can tell she's pure sass. If you're interested in adopting her, please contact Matt @ kapmatt@gmail.com.

FiPS Cares: This Pup Needs A Home!

This ADORABLE pit bull pup was abandoned, but is now available for adoption at the Brooklyn Animal Shelter. His Animal ID# is A911220, and the folks who found him say he's "a big sweetheart," and "is trained and actually listens."

[FiPS Cares]: Dining Out For Irene!

Robicelli's Cupcakes / Via Cupcakes Take the Cake

It's pissing cats and dogs in Brooklyn again. And as annoying as that is for those of us who live here, it's gotta' be a gazillion times more upsetting to the folks upstate who grow our food.

Produce from local CSA groups, including the Park Slope CSA and the Windsor Terrace/Kensington CSA, comes from the farms upstate that were hit hard by Irene. The Windsor Terrace CSA reports:

FiPS Cares: Help The Catskills!

Photo via WNYC

Hurricane Irene might have been anti-climactic for those of us in Brooklyn, but we were waaaaaaay luckier than people in the Catskills. YOU might only go there on weekends, but I have it on good authority that some people actually live there -- like, all the time. And those people need your help.

FiPS CARES: Kids' Cancer Charity Money Stolen

Mikey / Via Robicelli's Tumblr

You know what's cool? Helping raise money for kids with cancer. You know what's NOT COOL? When random strangers come along and steal that money. Cupcake haven Robicelli's recently posted this account on their blog

"This is Mikey. He’s the son of an old friend of Matt’s and the nephew of a friend of mine from high school.  He is five years old, loves Sesame Street, the color orange, and football.

Mikey has cancer.  He was diagnosed with an unidentifiable form that causes tumors to grow on his brain and spine, and although they’ve sent the pathology to everywhere from Memorial Sloan Kettering to Johns Hopkins, no one can figure out what the tumors are, or how to cure them."

Mikey's family has been working with an organization called St. Baldricks, which helps communities organize events to raise money to help kids with cancer. They're working on a fundraising drive to raise $20,000. Recently, some of that money was stolen:

Natalie, our Hope is in the (h)Air treasurer, was on the other line. Her dad was doing a great thing today. He was standing outside (in Donagan Hills, SI) collecting donations in a jug for our event, he had bags of stuffed animals and was manning a ‘Take a Toy, Make a Donation’ table! The jug was labeled & had Mikey’s picture on it so everyone knew where the money was going.

FIPS CARES: This Little Guy Still Needs a Home!

Back in March we posted a piece on this adorable pup named Chino, whose owner was facing eviction lest she find him a new home. Since our posting he's been fostered by a lovely woman named Hillary, but this pooch still needs a permanent abode.
