SUCKS/RULES: Why [Blogging] Totally Fucking Rules

Ok, so yesterday I wrote all about why blogging totally fucking sucks. And I meant it--it mostly does.

But there are a *few* things about it that do kinda rule, and it wouldn't be fair to leave that shit out of the equation.

As we've already covered, you're not gonna become a millionaire from your blog (well, maybe one of you out of the bajillion people who read this shit will), its gonna take up all your time, and there are going to be days (many, probably) when you feel like setting the whole damn thing on fire Taliban style. BUT, there is a whole bunch of other shit that's come my way as a result of my blog, and and now that I've shared the ugly, I thought I'd share some of the pretty:

*A job: Indirectly, my blog got me my job as the Marketing Director at Squarespace. And directly, it got me a job freelance writing at MTV. True story.

*Friends: I've met a shitload of really cool people as a result of my blog (and Twitter), some of whom have become great friends.

*Self esteem: sometimes people say really nice shit about me, or my blog, or something that happened as a result of my blog, and that has definitely given me some short-lived self-esteem shots here and there (and then, of course, I just get right back to all my Jewish, self-hate bullshit).

*Practice: wanna know how to be a writer? You just write. That's really it (assuming you have any talent whatsoever--but this is Brooklyn so everyone is obvs smart). Having a blog gives me a framework for forcing myself to write regularly. For lazy bitches like me, this is crucial. And sidenote: just like with sports, you can literally start to feel yourself get better and better as a writer the more you practice...and blogging every day is a lot of fucking practice.

*An excuse: sometimes when I don't want to do shit, I get to use my blog as an excuse. "I would totally LOVE to come to your kiddie cooking class Kwanzaa party, but I have a HUGE post I need to get done for FIPS...sorry!" Or, "I have been totally dying to see your naked, one-man-show comedy vaudeville performance art piece for weeks now, but I update my blog EVERY DAY, so I just have not been able to find the time!"

*Community: I think I'm a moron, because this is the one thing that I TOTALLY did not anticipate about blogging, and its been one of the best surprises: if you're lucky like me, your blog will help define its own little "community." And I don't even mean my literal community of Park Slope...I mean, the people who live in Park Slope (or Bk, or NYC) that dig my blog, and share my point-of-view, and send me out electronic "fuck yeah" fist pumps every day with their comments, links and emails to me--cause these are two very different things. The cool part is, your "community" doesn't even need to have a lot of people in it. Because the gift of finding a group of strangers, who all manage to rally around the notion that they dig the shit you write about, is pretty fucking cool in and of itself.

*Business opportunities - ok, so you probably won't make much from your blog itself, but its possible other opportunities might pop up as a result of your blog...like the Meatup for ex. And shit like that would not be remotely possible without the community that was already being created by our blog in the first place.

So, yeah...that's mostly it (I think?). I'm sure there's way more shit that I left out, but I'm pretty positive that this is the most boring post I've ever written in my life thus far, so I'm gonna pull the plug.

In the blogging sucks/rules battle royale, I'm going to give the first place trophy to "sucks," with the caveat that I'm talking about all blogs OTHER than FIPS (cause you know I love you bitches *that* much--and I've gotten way lucky with this whole thing).

*Also, by "sucks" I mostly mean: its v. v. haaaaaard

*And can we all make that blog gang sign (see photo above) happen as a new thing...like now?
